The Epicurious Readers book club meets the second Wednesday of every month at various restaurants around Louisville that “mostly” match whatever book they are reading. As a group of excited foodies and culturists varying in age from mid-40s to mid-80s with many different life experiences and perspectives (there are two mother-daughter combos and one husband and wife pair in the group), discussion is always lively and fun. Book club leader Michelle Maxim shares a memorable quote from the group’s latest novel, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, as well as thoughts about one of her favorite books of all time.
From the book:
“I can feel a sob building in the back of my throat, but I swallow it down. This is what he does — this is what he always does. He’s a master at it, making me feel as though everything is my fault, making me feel worthless.”
What is the best book you’ve ever read, and why?
This is an impossible question for me, but there is a book I recommend out all the time – Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. It’s a masterpiece of fiction that takes elements of many myths, cultures, and Americana and turns it all up, down, and around to make you think, wonder, and want to read it over and over again.
What other books has the club enjoyed?
We read Mark Halprin’s Memoir from Antproof Case in September and Martin Cruz Smith’s Tatiana: An Arkady Renko Novel in October. We will have a party in December instead of reading a book.
