If you know someone who is grieving over the loss of a pet, Bob Mueller, senior director of mission and stewardship at Hosparus — and pet owner — shows you how your actions and words can make a difference.
- Allow the pet owner to talk openly about his or her pet and feelings of loss.
- Encourage sharing stories and memories about the pet.
- Send a condolence card. There are cards specifically created for pet loss, and if you can’t locate one, convey your own message in a note.
- Send a donation in memory of the deceased or lost pet to any animal-related organization.
- Offer to help create a photo album or scrapbook in memory of the pet.
- If the pet is to be taken to the vet for euthanasia, offer to accompany the owner to the vet.
Here’s how to say it:
- I’ll always remember your stories about Sassy.
- I am so sorry.
- Tucker was a special dog.
- Please accept my deepest sympathies.
- What a comfort T-bear was to you; he will truly be missed.
- What sad news. I am so sorry for your loss.
